The ultimate Graduate Advance experience…
Hyo-Jae An, a 2009 LSE BSc Social Policy Grad, has worked as part of the Careers Service team for 6 months. This is her final day before starting an exciting job at MediaCom – we’re sad to say goodbye, but really proud of her too! Hyo-Jae wanted to pass on her experience of using our Graduate Advance service to encourage other LSE students, especially those who have never used the Careers Service, to give us try…
Working at the careers service after graduating from the LSE was ironic for me, seeing as I never went to the careers service as a student. Especially as the PA to the director of Careers, I was anxious and slightly nervous that she would find out that I hardly knew a thing about what the careers service offered to students.
I remember my first careers coaching session with Rachel, having a very blurry career direction as well as low confidence with my 2:2, I didn’t think I was a very desirable candidate for employers, but with a few sessions, my CV was looking much more professional and I began to think positively about my future.
The 6 months that I have interned at LSE Careers has not only given me a real taster and experience into an administrative office job, but it has also boosted my confidence, CV and interview skills. I don’t think I will ever find a working environment where people are as passionate and supportive with you about reaching your dream job. The knowledge and advice I received from the Careers Advisers have helped me to move on to my next platform in my career at Mediacom. I have a lot to thank the Graduate Internship scheme, I have gained essential administrative and organisation skills that I can take on to my new job.
I am sure there are lots of graduates out there who are just as clueless as I was. The LSE Graduate Internship gave me the opportunity to figure out my career path at my own pace also with the much needed encouragement and support. So thank you!
